Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about Tennis Network and USTA league play.
Getting Started
What is Tennis Network?
Tennis Network is a free platform that helps USTA tournament captains and participants organize teams, schedule matches, and manage lineups. Beyond league play, you can also organize and join social tennis events like practice sessions, tournaments, and charity matches. We make it easy to coordinate your entire tennis experience.
Can I organize non-USTA teams?
Yes, you can organize non-USTA teams on Tennis Network. Simply enter "N/A" for the USTA team number when creating your team.
Do I need a USTA membership to use Tennis Network?
No, you can create an account and explore teams on Tennis Network without a USTA membership. However, to participate in USTA league matches, you'll need an active USTA membership and NTRP rating. Visit usta.com to join.
How do I sign up?
Click the "Sign Up" button in the top right corner. You'll receive a verification code via email or SMS (your choice) to complete your registration. No passwords required!
Why don't you use passwords?
We use secure email and SMS codes instead of passwords for better security. Every time you log in, you'll receive a fresh code via email or text message. This eliminates the risk of password reuse, weak passwords, and password breaches.
Can I receive text message notifications?
Yes! You can opt-in to receive SMS notifications for login codes, match reminders, lineup confirmations, and team updates. Update your notification preferences in your profile settings. You can choose to receive notifications via email, SMS, or both.
What location info do you store?
Teams can specify City/Region and State so players can find nearby teams. Your profile can include a Home State, used to warn you if you try to join a team in another state. You can filter teams by state and city/region on the Browse Teams page.
Does Tennis Network have an app?
Yes. Tennis Network is available as a native app on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. Desktop and laptop users can also install Tennis Network as a Progressive Web App (PWA) in supported browsers. Your account and data stay in sync across devices.
How do I install Tennis Network on my device?
On iPhone or iPad: Install from the App Store.
On Android: Install from Google Play.
On Desktop or Laptop: Use Tennis Network in your browser, or install it as a PWA in supported browsers (such as Chrome or Edge) using the "Install" option in the address bar or browser menu.
After installation, sign in with your Tennis Network account and your teams, matches, and events will be available across all your devices.
For Players
How do I join a team?
Browse open teams that match your rating, location, and preferences, or use a join code if a captain has invited you to a private team. You can be a member of multiple teams across different seasons and formats.
Why did I get a warning about home state?
If your profile Home State differs from the team's State, we ask you to confirm before joining. Update your Home State in your profile to keep the warning accurate.
What is my NTRP rating?
NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) is the official USTA rating system ranging from 2.5 to 7.0. Your rating is based on match results and helps ensure fair competition. Check your rating on your USTA account or get rated through USTA assessment clinics.
Can I play on multiple teams?
Yes! You can join multiple teams as long as they don't conflict (different seasons, age brackets, or formats). Make sure to check USTA eligibility rules for your specific league.
How do I update my availability?
Once a captain creates a match date, you'll receive a notification via email or SMS (if enabled in your preferences). Log in, go to your team page, and mark yourself as "yes", "maybe", or "no" for that match.
How do I add my matches to my personal calendar?
Go to the Calendar page and click "Show" under "Subscribe to Your Calendar Feed". Copy the calendar link and paste it into your calendar app (Google Calendar, Outlook, Apple Calendar, etc.) using the "Subscribe to calendar" or "Add calendar by URL" feature. Your matches will automatically sync and update every 6 hours. All your team matches appear in one calendar feed.
For Captains
How do I create a team?
Log in and navigate to "Teams" → "Create Team". Select your season, format (Fixed, Variable, Combo, Mixed, Tri-Level), rating requirements, age bracket, City/Region, and State. You can make your team public or private with a join code.
How do I create a demo team for testing?
Log in and navigate to "Teams" → "Create Team". Make all other selections normally, but you must mark the team as private with a join code. This way, it will not be displayed to the public and you can do any testing you want with this team.
What's the difference between Fixed, Variable, Combo, Mixed, and Tri-Level?
- Fixed: Players must have the specific rating (e.g., 3.5 team = all 3.5 players)
- Variable: Players can have a range of ratings within limits set by the league or team (1-point spread allowed, e.g., 8.0 team can be 4.0+4.0, 3.5+4.5))
- Combo: Combined ratings (e.g., 7.0 = 3.0+4.0, 3.5+3.5, or 4.0+3.0)
- Mixed: Men and women on same team, combined ratings with 1-point spread allowed
- Tri-Level: Multiple rating levels (3.0/3.5/4.0 or 3.5/4.0/4.5)
How do I invite players?
Use the Invite/Add Players modal on your team page. You now have multiple options:
- Candidates: Invite qualified players suggested by the system via Email or SMS, and manage pending invites (including auto-add or delete).
- Email: Send invites to a comma-separated list of email addresses, with an optional note.
- SMS: Send invites by phone number, with an optional short note.
- File Import: Upload CSV/XLSX/XLS to invite in bulk (up to 30 players per import, with a downloadable template).
- Manual: Add one player at a time by entering profile details.
For existing users, you can choose to send a normal invite or auto-add them directly to the team (no acceptance required).
What are co-captains?
Co-captains help you manage the team. They can create matches, build lineups, and invite players. You can assign multiple co-captains to share the workload. To add a co-captain, go to your team page and click "Add Co-Captain", then select a team member. Co-captains have the same permissions as the captain except they cannot cancel the team or remove the captain.
How do match payments work?
When building a lineup, you can set a cost per player (e.g., $10 for court fees). Players are notified via email and can pay online using PayPal (credit/debit card). Once payment is confirmed, they're marked as "Paid" and receive a confirmation email. You can view payment status, send reminders, and issue refunds if needed. Payment reports are available under the Admin section.
How do I message my team?
On your team page, click "Message Players" to send an email to all team members or specific players. You can send general announcements, match reminders, or communicate changes. Messages are sent via email and also appear in the team chat. Co-captains can also send messages to the team.
How do I build a lineup?
After creating a match date and collecting availability, use the lineup builder. The system will show player availability, preferences, and validate rating requirements automatically. 18+ and 40+ Fixed teams play 2 Singles + 3 Doubles. Other formats play 3 Doubles only.
